Is there any truth to buying a mattress online is less expensive than a retail store?  How much of a difference can shopping around really make?

Buying a mattress online can be less money, but it's VERY difficult.  Also, often the delivery/shipping charges can eat up any savings that you have on the mattress.  Lastly, it's often difficult to get satisfactory customer service from an out-of-town company.  So be careful.

You need to make sure that you are getting the exact mattress that you want, and more important, it's something that you can be comfortable sleeping on for the next 10 years.

In this economy, you will probably find it easier to buy a mattress at a local retailer (even by phone).  Prices are dropping and you can get them to match the price of the online retailer.  This gives you two advantages:  1.  You can actually try the mattress that you are going to be sleeping on for the next 10 years.  2.  You will get local delivery, removal of your old mattress and long-term customer service from a retailer you can deal with locally.
