How to Know When it is Time to Replace Your Mattress

There have been more innovations and improvements in mattresses in the past 7 years than there were in the 70 years before that.

Memory foams, new latex foams, fire retardancy, one-sided (no-flip) mattresses and advanced coil systems have all made mattress sets much better for sleeping, and better sleep is now regarded as meaning “better health”.

As a rule of thumb, after seven to nine years of use, it is the proper time to evaluate your mattress and boxspring. And you should reevaluate your mattress and boxspring every year.

The following are signs that you may need a new mattress:

  • When you wake up in the morning with back pain and the pain goes away after an hour or so to pass, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you vacation and sleep better than you have ever slept, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When your last purchase of a new mattress was before 1999, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you wake up more tired and sore than when you went to bed, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you are tired and exhausted throughout the day from not getting proper sleep, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you can’t sleep near the edge of your mattress due to the edge collapsing, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you roll into the hole in the middle of your mattress and find your partner already there, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When the mattress you are sleeping on was a wedding present and you are now celebrating your 21st wedding anniversary, it may be time to purchase a new mattress.

When you make the bed and you can see the body impressions under the sheets and blankets, it’s time to buy a new mattress.

How to Choose the Right Mattress for You

Since purchasing a new mattress and is an important decision, careful consideration should go into your selection.  Keep in mind: A good night’s sleep is vital to your quality of life. So a comfortable mattress will determine how well you sleep and how rested you will feel in the morning.

Where do I shop for my new mattress?  Local mattress stores tend to provide more service than department stores, furniture stores and large chains.  It is best to shop for a mattress where you can comfortably test the mattress to see if it is right for you. If you are purchasing this along with a partner, they should also test the mattresses with you. And be sure to wear comfortable clothing. When visiting a showroom, you should feel confident that the sales staff is helping you to select the right mattress for you, not for him. A professional qualified sales representative should be asking questions about your sleep habits and comfort levels. And a showroom should have more than one brand name to choose from and have a variety of styles and models so that you can make the right selection.  Most importantly, they should encourage you to lay down and you SHOULD lay down, take your time and try the mattress.

What size do I need to purchase?

There are four basic sizes:

Twin       39”x 75”
Full/Double    54”x 75”
Queen     60”x 80”
King        76”x 80”

Today, for one adult, a full size is recommended, if over 5’11" tall, then a queen. For a child, either a twin size or full size is recommended. Since the average sleeper turns 40 to 60 times during the night, it is important to select the right size. For two adults, either the queen size or king size is recommended. To ensure that both people have enough space, select the largest size that the room can accommodate.

Do I need to purchase the mattress separately or as a set? If the mattress is for a platform bed, a mattress only is usually acceptable. If you are purchasing a mattress for an existing boxspring, you may need to consider the following points. An old box spring/foundation may not provide sufficient support. It may appear that your mattress is sagging when the problem may be due to a non-supportive boxspring. Mattresses and box springs/foundations do wear out with use. A mattress is designed for the best performance to be used in conjunction with the matching boxspring as a part of the total sleep set.  Plus, boxsprings and mattresses are more fire retardant now than old ones.

How do I find the right mattress? The best way to determine if a mattress is right for you is to test the mattresses. Lie on the mattress the way you sleep. If you sleep on your side, lie on your side. If you lie on your stomach, test the mattress on your stomach. Pay special attention to the way the mattress supports your spine. Ideally, you want the mattress to support your spine at all points while allowing it to maintain its natural curve. If there is not enough support, you can develop lower back pain. If the mattress is too firm, you can experience uncomfortable pressure. The firmer support is better for you, but the mattress has to feel comfortable. Be sure to test the mattresses with a proper pillow since the pillow is just as important as the mattress for a good night’s sleep. And do keep in mind that there is no best mattress, only a mattress that is best for you.

How much do I need to spend? Prices for queen mattress sets can range anywhere from $299 to $7000. You should purchase the most comfortable mattress that you can afford. Keep in mind that we spend one third of our lives in bed. Usually, the more you spend, the longer the comfort life. The more expensive sets have better support systems and use more expensive upholstery layers such as visco memory foam, latex, cashmere, etc. The quality of the materials used determine how long a mattress and foundation will provide you the support and comfort you need. The top quality brands use the most innovative and advanced materials available. If you feel more comfortable on one mattress than another, then it is right for you. Only you can tell if it is the right feel for you. And be sure the store you are buying from has a price guarantee where they guarantee to meet or beat anyone’s price. This is the assurance you need to know that you are getting the lowest prices.

Is the coil count the most important factor in finding the right mattress?   No, the coil count does not play an important part in the support system. The coil count alone should not determine if a mattress is right for you. There are other factors such as thickness of the coil wires and the type of coil that determines the support the mattress will offer along with the coil count. As determined by the orthopedic surgeons, the minimum coil count for two adults for every night use is 390 coils. Almost all premium mattresses offer this.

Do I really need a mattress protector? Absolutely, a premium mattress protector will protect the sleep surface and keep your mattress fresh and clean. The best ones are those that are waterproof and have dust mite protection.
